Switchboard Upgrades in the Eastern Suburbs

Replacing an old ceramic fuse board with a modern switchboard, with circuit breakers and safety switches, is one of the most worthwhile safety upgrades for an older Eastern Suburbs home.

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

Switchboards in Eastern Suburbs properties

The Eastern Suburbs has a lot of housing built before modern wiring rules: Victorian and Federation terraces in Paddington, Woollahra and Randwick, and inter-war flats around Bondi, Bondi Beach and Coogee. These homes have often been wired in stages, with a newer kitchen circuit added to an original board. We map every circuit before we start, so the new board is properly labelled and each circuit is protected.

In apartment buildings, your unit's board may sit inside the unit or in a meter room on each floor. We work with strata managers where we need access to common areas, and we keep shared spaces clean and tidy.

Heritage terraces have narrow hallways and little space for a meter box. We plan the layout so the new board fits where it needs to and is easy to get to in an emergency.

What's included

What affects the price

Cost depends on how many circuits your home has, whether the meter panel needs work, the condition of the existing wiring and how easy the board is to reach. We inspect first and give you a written price before any work starts.

Work on the meter, service mains or the supply cable into the property is Level 2 work, which we do not do. If your upgrade needs it, we refer that part to an accredited provider. See Level 2 electrical work.

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

It depends on the size of the board and the number of circuits. We tell you how long the job will take, and when the power will be off, before we start.

Do I need strata approval to upgrade the switchboard in my unit?

If the board is inside your lot, usually not. If it sits in a common meter room or the work affects common property, check with your strata manager. We can provide the details they need.

Will a new switchboard stop my safety switch tripping?

A modern board separates circuits so a fault on one circuit doesn't take out the whole house. If an appliance or a wiring fault is causing the trips, we will find and fix it too.
