Working in terraces and apartments
High ceilings in Victorian terraces suit pendants and feature lighting, but the roof space is often tight or inaccessible. We plan cable runs to avoid damaging decorative ceilings and cornices. In apartments with concrete slab ceilings, recessed downlights are often not an option, so we will recommend surface-mounted fittings or track lighting instead.
For homes near the beach in Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, Coogee and Maroubra, we recommend outdoor fittings with a suitable IP rating and corrosion-resistant finishes. Cheap outdoor lights corrode quickly in salt air and are a common cause of nuisance tripping.
Getting the lighting right
We help you choose a colour temperature that suits each room, typically warm white for living areas and bedrooms and a neutral white for kitchens and work areas. We also make sure dimmers are compatible with the LED fittings, which avoids flicker and buzzing.
Lighting Installation FAQs
Can you install downlights in a concrete ceiling?
Usually not recessed, unless there is a false ceiling. We can suggest surface-mounted downlights, track lighting or pendants that give a similar result.
Why do my outdoor lights keep tripping the safety switch?
Moisture getting into a fitting or a junction box is the most common cause, especially near the coast. We will test the circuit, find the leaking fitting and replace it with a properly rated one.
Do LED downlights really save power?
Yes. LEDs use far less electricity than halogen globes and run much cooler, which also reduces heat in the roof space.
