When to call an emergency electrician
Call us straight away if you notice any of the following:
- Power is off in your home, but your neighbours still have power
- A safety switch trips again the moment you reset it
- A power point, switch or light is sparking, buzzing or hot to touch
- You can smell burning plastic near the switchboard or an outlet
- Water has got into light fittings, often after a storm or a leak from the flat upstairs
- Exposed or damaged wiring after building work
If there is smoke, flame or someone has had an electric shock, call 000 first. If the whole street is dark, check Ausgrid's outage information or call Ausgrid on 13 13 88, because that is a network fault rather than a fault in your home.
Emergencies we see in Eastern Suburbs homes
Many of our after-hours calls come from older apartment blocks in Bondi, Bondi Beach and Coogee. A fault in one unit can be traced back to a shared riser or the main switchroom, so we often need access to common property. If you are a tenant or an owner in a strata building, have your building manager or strata contact handy when you call.
In the terraces of Paddington and Randwick, emergencies often start with a ceramic fuse that has blown on an overloaded circuit, or an old rubber-insulated cable that has finally broken down. In beachside homes, water and salt air get into outdoor lights and power points and trip the safety switch after heavy rain.
What happens when you call
- We ask a few quick questions so we can tell you whether it is safe to stay in the home
- An electrician is dispatched and we give you an honest ETA
- On site, we make the installation safe first, then find the cause
- You get a clear price before any repair goes ahead
- Where work requires it, we issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work

Emergency Electrician FAQs
Do you charge extra for emergency callouts at night in the Eastern Suburbs?
You are quoted for the repair itself before we start, so you know the cost upfront, whatever the time of day.
My power is out in my Bondi apartment. Is it my unit or the building?
Check whether your neighbours and the common-area lights have power. If only your unit is affected, the fault is usually in your own switchboard or circuits and we can help. If the whole building or street is out, it is likely a network issue for Ausgrid.
Should I keep resetting a safety switch that keeps tripping?
No. A safety switch that trips again immediately is doing its job. Leave it off, unplug appliances on that circuit and call us so we can find the fault safely.
