How we find the fault
We start with the switchboard and work outwards: isolating circuits, insulation-resistance testing the wiring and checking each appliance in turn. This takes the guesswork out, so you are not paying for parts that don't solve the problem.
In the Eastern Suburbs, the usual culprits are moisture in outdoor fittings near the coast, old wiring in terraces that has broken down with age, and DIY additions made during past renovations. In strata buildings, we will tell you if the fault is on common property, so it can go to the owners corporation.
Repairs we carry out
Once we have found the fault, we will explain it in plain English and give you a price to fix it. Most repairs are completed on the same visit: replacing a faulty fitting, re-terminating a loose connection or replacing a damaged cable.
Fault Finding and Repairs FAQs
Why does my safety switch trip only when it rains?
Water is getting into something on that circuit, usually an outdoor light, power point or a junction box in the roof. We will find it and replace or reseal the faulty part.
Can a faulty appliance trip the whole house?
Yes. A fridge, kettle or washing machine with an earth leakage fault can trip the safety switch. We test the appliances as part of fault finding.
Is flickering a sign of a dangerous fault?
It can be. A loose connection can overheat. If the flickering is getting worse, or you can hear buzzing, call us.
