Many Bondi unit boards are original or have been patched, often with fuses and no safety switches. We replace them inside the unit, coordinating with strata if the meter room is involved.
Switchboard Upgrade Bondi: what we typically find
Unit boards in Bondi's walk-up flats are often small enclosures with two to four ceramic fuses: one for lights, one or two for power, and one for the stove or hot water. Upgrading means a new enclosure with circuit breakers and safety switches, testing each circuit as it's connected, and often splitting the power circuit so the kitchen has its own.
The mains cable from the meter room to your unit is usually common property. If it's undersized or damaged, we'll explain what needs to happen through your strata manager.
How the job works in Bondi
Once the new board is in, every circuit is tested and labelled. You'll get a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work for your records, and for your landlord or strata manager if needed.
Many Bondi flats also have a meter in a shared room downstairs. If the main isolator or meter equipment needs work, we'll coordinate with strata and the network.
Have this ready when you call
- A photo of your current board
- Your strata manager's contact details
- Any planned appliances, such as air conditioning
Signs your switchboard needs upgrading
- You still have rewireable ceramic fuses
- There is no safety switch (RCD), or only one covering some circuits
- Breakers trip when the kettle, heater and air conditioner run together
- The board is mounted on old asbestos-type backing or is scorched or discoloured
- You are adding air conditioning, an induction cooktop or an EV charger
- A real estate agent, insurer or building inspector has flagged it
About Bondi
Bondi's housing is mostly red-brick inter-war walk-up flats, with semi-detached houses and newer apartment buildings in between. In the older blocks, the wiring often dates from the original build, apart from a few added circuits, so tripping safety switches and overloaded circuits come up a lot.

Switchboard Upgrades in Bondi: FAQs
Do I need the strata's permission for a unit board upgrade?
For a board inside your lot, usually not, but check your by-laws. Anything involving the meter room or the mains cable involves the owners corporation.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
It depends on the size of the board and the number of circuits. We tell you how long the job will take, and when the power will be off, before we start.
Do I need strata approval to upgrade the switchboard in my unit?
If the board is inside your lot, usually not. If it sits in a common meter room or the work affects common property, check with your strata manager. We can provide the details they need.
