Bondi's older apartment blocks account for many of our after-hours calls. Power out to one unit, a safety switch that won't reset, or a burning smell from a unit board. We often get to Bondi quickly because we are working in the area so much.
Emergency Electrician Bondi: what we typically find
In a walk-up flat, the first thing we check is whether the fault is inside your unit or in the building. Your unit's board is usually just inside the front door or in the kitchen, while the meter and main fuse for each unit sit in a common meter room on the ground floor. If your neighbours have power and your unit's board shows a tripped safety switch or blown fuse, the fault is almost certainly yours, and we can fix it.
Common causes of after-hours outages in Bondi flats include an oven or hot water element that has failed and is leaking to earth, water from the flat upstairs getting into a light fitting, and old fuse wire finally burning out on an overloaded kitchen circuit. Each of these can be made safe and repaired the same night.
Have this ready when you call
- Your unit number and whether the meter room is locked
- Whether neighbours and common areas have power
- What you were using when the power went off
When to call an emergency electrician
Call us straight away if you notice any of the following:
- Power is off in your home, but your neighbours still have power
- A safety switch trips again the moment you reset it
- A power point, switch or light is sparking, buzzing or hot to touch
- You can smell burning plastic near the switchboard or an outlet
- Water has got into light fittings, often after a storm or a leak from the flat upstairs
- Exposed or damaged wiring after building work
If there is smoke, flame or someone has had an electric shock, call 000 first. If the whole street is dark, check Ausgrid's outage information or call Ausgrid on 13 13 88, because that is a network fault rather than a fault in your home.
About Bondi
Bondi's housing is mostly red-brick inter-war walk-up flats, with semi-detached houses and newer apartment buildings in between. In the older blocks, the wiring often dates from the original build, apart from a few added circuits, so tripping safety switches and overloaded circuits come up a lot.

Emergency Electrician in Bondi: FAQs
The flat upstairs has leaked into my light fitting. What should I do?
Turn the lighting circuit off at your board if it's safe to do so, don't use the light, and call us. Let your strata manager know about the leak too.
Do you charge extra for emergency callouts at night in the Eastern Suburbs?
You are quoted for the repair itself before we start, so you know the cost upfront, whatever the time of day.
My power is out in my Bondi apartment. Is it my unit or the building?
Check whether your neighbours and the common-area lights have power. If only your unit is affected, the fault is usually in your own switchboard or circuits and we can help. If the whole building or street is out, it is likely a network issue for Ausgrid.
